Hey there curious minds and music lovers! I am Sarah Buxton. Welcome to the biography portion of my page. Let me just start this exercise by saying that the music biz is nothing like I expected it would be. I had a whole plan mapped out for myself when I signed with Lyric Street Records in 2005. I had my first record all finished with singles one, two, three and four all decided upon. Even if I never became a huge, platinum-selling, international superstar, I would put my records out, hit the road and pave my own way.
I went on a radio tour and quickly learned that there is a WORLD of other elements involved in getting a record released besides just a voice, a song and a heck of a lot of hard work!! Some things are truly out of my control. It was a tough lesson to learn. What's the old adage? "If you wanna hear God laugh, tell him your plans?" Well...I told him. And he laughed! HA!
I'm a pretty polite person (most of the time) and I would've laughed along...but I didn't get the joke. That's exactly how it felt. There were some tears, but with every tear came an even bigger blessing. As if I hadn't already believed from the start that there was a plan for me written in the stars, all of these insanely amazing random events starting happening to me, events that I never could have dreamt up myself or planned out in a million years.
Keith Urban recorded "Stupid Boy," a song I originally wrote and recorded for my first record. It became a top 5 hit on the country charts and was nominated for CMA Song of the Year...oh and it won him a 2008 Grammy for "Best Male Country Vocal Performance." Still, with no record out yet, I miraculously got (please pinch me!) two consecutive ACM nods for Top New Female Vocalist in 2008 and 2009. It was crazy! I couldn't seem to get my own songs to fly up the charts, but my phone kept ringing with other artists who wanted me to collaborate with them: Dierks Bentley "Sweet & Wild," Martina McBride "Sunny Side Up," Kenny Rogers "Someone Somewhere Tonight," John Corbett "Good as Gone," and Keith Urban "Tu Compania" (yes, that was me beat boxing with him at the 2008 ACMsI just truly embraced my success for what it was: UNCONVENTIONAL. With the support of my label, I started producing my own music. "Space" was my first attempt at production and we were truly happy with the way it turned out, so I just kept going. Among the new tracks that were surfacing, the one that kept banging me over the head like a frying pan was "Outside My Window." I wrote it with Mark Hudson, Victoria Shaw and Gary Burr about a year ago. The whole vibe of the song completely matched my new attitude of embrace-the-unconventional. It's about how, in the middle of all of the chaos of this world we live in, it's still possible to keep tradition alive and cling to what's dear to us -- our friends, our family, the music we love -- while still embracing the inevitable, constant change.
I really had to keep this mantra of change in mind while I was producing the track. I didn't want it to get too stagnant or typical. This song had been recorded and mixed...worked on some more and mixed again...and it still wasn't hitting the sweet spot for me. It wasn't until the song's final stages of production when I called on Tom Bukovac (2009 ACM guitar player of the year, 5 year winner of Music Row Magazine's guitar player of the year and 3 year winner of my heart) to DO HIS THING that "Outside My Window" truly knocked my proverbial SOCKS off. Talk about a fearless guitar riff!! I could be biased, but his tone on this tune has me jumping around the room!! Those of you who know me, know that I mean this. Literally. Jumping.
I immediately called up Victoria Shaw. After we jammed out to the track in my jeep, she took me inside, turned on her computer and showed me Mark Hudson's music video for his song, "Happy". I was floored. She looked at me and said, "SARAH! WOULDN'T IT BE SO SUPER COOL TO HAVE MARK DO A VIDEO LIKE THIS FOR "OUTSIDE MY WINDOW???" I was screaming, "YESSSSS!!!!" back at her before she could even finish her thought. How perfect! For $80 and a pair of pink angel wings, Mark Hudson (Grammy award winning ROCK producer and songwriter, freak visionary musical shaman) single-handedly captured me in the most real way. Well okay, it wasn't single-handedly done by Mark. Gary and Vic were the crew. But it just doesn't GET more "me" than this. It was all done with home video cameras and Mark's own computer. Just the way I like to do things. No fuss, just friends. BIG fun.
Lyric Street loved the video and they decided to use it as a promotional tool to launch the single. I feel like when you see it, you will understand my true spirit. I feel like I've found my home.
I'll never forget talking to Keith Urban backstage at one of his shows. I asked him how he kept going all those years in the very beginning, before all of his success. He put his arm around me and said, "Baby girl, when you do it for the love of the MUSIC, the rest works itself out." He was so right.
It took me a while to get to this place, but my career in music is all about working with the people I love and trust and having fun doing it.
Yeah...you could definitely say that the view is pretty spectacular right now, outside my window. La La La La La Laaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!
